Cub Scout Visit - March 23, 2022

A local cub scout meeting was held at the museum on 3/23/22. The scouts took a tour of the museum and then did a scavenger hunt with their parent. Marianne also weighed 5 at a time on the big mill scale and they all enjoyed playing with the claxon.

EHHS Scholarship Award

The East Haddam Historical Society is happy to announce it will be funding the 3rd annual EHHS Scholarship Award. This is a $500.00 award given to a Hale Ray senior who will be attending an institution of higher learning in the next year. The applicant should show an interest in and understanding of the importance of history and/or service to the community of East Haddam. The East Haddam Historical Society illuminates and preserves the stories of the people and places that shape our community. The history of East Haddam, and the lower Connecticut Valley, has had a significant impact on our state and the region as well as the world. Supporting students who show an understanding of the importance of learning from history and how to apply those lessons makes our community stronger.

The application is available to students on the high school Naviance web page.

Kaitlin Apgar was the 2020 recipient of this award, and Alexander Gerrish received this award in 2019.

American Girl Doll Club - March 4, 2020

We took our early American doll to meet the American Girl Doll club at the Rathbun Library in East Haddam.

Cub Scout Visit

The East Haddam Cub Scouts Pack 22, Wolf Den 3 visited the East Haddam Historical Society & Museum to learn more about our town. They were very interested in the Twine Mills exhibit freight scale and fish net loom, the Klaxon siren used at Goodspeed Landing, 1913 photos of building the East Haddam Bridge, and the Twentieth Century Moodus Architectural Model of proposed road changes and new buildings.

The Cubs made bridge models of their own after their tour. Their visit and discussion helped them accomplish the Cub Scouts' goal to learn more about their town.

Museum staff, parents, and Cubs enjoyed the evening tour. The Cubs plan to come back with their families to teach others about what they learned.

3rd Grade Visit

What a wonderful day third grade students had at the East Haddam Historical Society and Museum on June 3! Guided by docents Dr. Marianne Halpin, Lynne Meyer, Andrea Skwarek, and George Drenga, the kids explored different collections housed in the museum. Local agriculture, our well-known bridge, mills, the Victorian era, East Haddam sculptor Heinze Warneke, and William Gillette were among topics of interest classes investigated. It was quite a lot for 9-year-olds to absorb, but participating adults were amazed at the interest and focus their young guests displayed. Students were well-prepared to ask meaningful questions and provide prior knowledge to docents who chatted with them. Kids arrived and left the Museum enthusiastic about their experience. We can't wait to meet next year's class!
